N95 and N99 Face Masks Protect you From Contamination, But Also The Coronavirus?
A high-quality mask can be helpful in keeping most viruses, contaminants, and other airborne illnesses from the lungs. It could also protect you from the coronavirus.
Pollution. Dust Particles. And now deadly viruses. We really need to be a little more careful with what we breathe. Unfortunately, it is largely invisible, and that poses a perplexing problem. How do we keep viruses, allergens, contaminants, and dust out of our nose and respiratory systems? The simple answer is masks.
You can also know them as pollution masks or dust masks. Whatever the name, they all do the same thing: they protect you from many viruses and air pollutants by filtering the air you breathe. With the deadly Coronavirus spreading across the globe, travelers and even citizens may want to stay protected. The need becomes even more urgent for a face mask, considering that person-to-person transmission has been confirmed.
Humans are said to inhale approximately 8 liters of air every day. The chances of all sorts of unwanted airborne particles and deadlier components entering our bodies is pretty high.
The World Health Organization (WHO) finally declared that the current outbreak of Coronavirus is a global health emergency. According to the latest reports, 213 people died in China and up to 10,000 cases of Coronavirus infections are being treated. The WHO also confirmed that there have been 98 cases reported in 18 countries worldwide.
Health officials in Chicago, USA The US confirmed the first case of human-to-virus transmission of corona to viruses. The situation is bad, as efforts to curb the spread of the Coronavirus have not yielded results that were perhaps expected, but the virus is also spreading globally.
However, buying a mask is not easy. There are a variety of options from various brands, and they all claim to be the best at what they do. But not everyone can be equally effective at filtering bad air before breathing it in. But do these really work? “It can’t hurt and it could help. Some studies have shown that wearing a surgical mask can help prevent the flu.
And wearing a surgical mask and an alcohol-based hand sanitizer was shown to reduce the number of flu-like illnesses in a group of students living in a college dorm, even more than wearing a surgical mask alone, “says James M. Steckelberg, MD, Mayo Clinic.
Coronavirus is not exactly a flu, but it does have certain flu-like symptoms. Symptoms of 2019-nCoV include runny nose, cough, sore throat, and high temperature. It can also lead to pneumonia, an infection in which the lungs fill with fluid and can lead to death by “drowning.”
The Atlanta Healthcare Cambridge Admiral N99 (around Rs2,199; Atlantahealthcare.in) has been developed by Cambridge Mask Co., based in the UK, and is available in three variants. There is no valve (best for regular outdoor activities), with one valve (for light outdoor exercise) and two valves (for intensive exercise or outdoor activities).
For standard daily use, a valveless option should suffice. Single and dual valve options help reduce moisture build-up inside the mask during intense activity. These masks use military-grade filtration technology and protect you from dust, fuel-based contaminants, particulates, infectious pathogens, viruses, bacteria, mold, and spores, as well as pollen.
The activated carbon filter layer is developed by the UK Ministry of Defense and is designed to adsorb gaseous molecules. Available in multiple colors and patterns, and in small, medium, large, and XL sizes, important to someone who doesn’t want to compromise on fashion, even in these tough times.
“You should wear a face mask when you are in the same room with other people and when you visit a healthcare provider. If you can’t wear a mask, people living with you should wear one while they are in the same room as you, “says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States.
For anyone caring for someone infected with Coronavirus or living in the same household, the CDC says, “Wear a mask, gown, and disposable gloves when you touch or come in contact with blood, body fluids, and / or secretions such as sweat, saliva, sputum, runny nose, vomiting, urine, or diarrhea. Discard disposable masks, gowns, and gloves after use. Do not reuse. Wash hands immediately after removing mask, gown, and gloves. “
In China, the rush to buy masks has led to a situation where 3M, a leading manufacturer of facial masks, has run out of stock in its factories and flagship stores at multiple locations in China, according to reports from the Chinese news publication YiCai. It is not just about masks, because the situation in China is terrifying.
Reuters reported that rubber gloves, hand sanitizers, and even thermometers are scarce in most stores. Mask maker Lanhine told Reuters they are receiving requests for up to 200 million masks per day, which is much higher than the 400,000 masks that its factory can produce daily.
And it’s not just China. The Straits Times reports that Singapore’s Guardian pharmacy chain has seen sales of face masks quadruple in the past two weeks. The pharmacy has 115 stores in the country.
The Vogmask N99 (around Rs2,000 and up; NirvanaBeing.com) is available in microfiber and organic cotton variants, and offers multiple layers of filtration. In addition to the N99 filter, there is also the carbon derived from the coconut shell. It is designed to filter particles as small as 0.3 microns and are also available as single valve or double valve options.
But what about children? If you are traveling with children, it might be a good idea to use a package of Honeywell PM2.5 children’s anti-pollution masks with special valve (Rs 699 for a 6 mask pack; Amazon.in). These KN95 masks will protect your children from viruses. These masks are very light to use since they are made of paper and, after a few days of use, must be discarded.
There is a 3-layer filtration process, and this is ideal for someone who may need dust and fume protection for non-strenuous outdoor activities – there are no valves like some of the top-end masks, which work best when running or jogging. Honeywell sells them in the blue and icy white color options.
Not all masks are the same.
The popularity of protective respirators has grown steadily since the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002.1 But the use of a protective mask dates back almost a century, when a flu pandemic (1918-1920) killed up to 5% of the world population.2
Since then, scientists have debated whether wearing a mask can help prevent the spread of viruses.
Today, most agree that the highest quality protective masks play a role in an infection control strategy that includes regular hand washing. However, the most common masks do very little.
Anti-dust and face masks
Surgical, dental, and medical masks are examples of facial masks.
Dust masks are similar but are designed for construction and cleaning activities. Both types are among the most common and least expensive forms of personal respiratory protection.
Dust masks can partially block large airborne particles containing viruses and bacteria from reaching the mouth and nose. They can also provide partial protection to those around you by preventing saliva and respiratory secretions from escaping when you breathe or sneeze.
Although these masks can block large drops, they have two major flaws:
They do not filter or block smaller particles that are transmitted by coughing or sneezing, including ultrafine particles.
They offer only limited protection: they do not fit close enough on the face to protect a person from breathing or from the projection of many pollutants into the air.6
Respirators offer a higher level of personal respiratory protection. They look like face masks and dust, but are designed to fit comfortably on the face, eliminating air leaks. And unlike face masks and anti-dust, respirators are certified to meet minimum filtration and snug fit standards.7
Unfortunately, the effectiveness of a respirator is significantly compromised if the mask is not adjusted or worn correctly. A study published in Emerging Infectious Diseases of people who used respirators after Hurricane Katrina found that only 24% were well adjusted.8
Testing air pollution masks
Tests conducted by the Southern Research Institute published in Applied Biosafety confirmed that a respirator outperforms other masks, at least against particles the size of a drop.9
The researchers tested three common protective masks: a surgical mask, a preformed dust mask, and a common bandana, against an N95 respirator (the “95” means that the mask theoretically filters 95% of all particles in the tests). They attached the various devices to a mannequin equipped with a special aerosol probe and measured the efficiency against particles from 1.0 to 2.5 microns in diameter.
Filtration efficiencies were found to be:
- Dust mask: 6.1%
- Bandana: 11.3%
- Surgical mask: 33.3%
- N95 respirator: 89.6%
The researchers suggested that the lack of optimal fit was the reason the N95 respirator did not achieve 95% theoretical filtration efficiency.
They also concluded that the dust mask, bandana, and even the surgical mask offered very little protection compared to the N95 respirator. In fact, they noted that “wearing these face masks can produce a false sense of protection.”
Focus on adjustment
Most importantly, even an approved respirator must be properly adjusted to function. Here are some suggestions to make sure that a respirator fits comfortably and correctly:
Only use masks that meet or exceed national standards.10,11 One option is the KN95-certified IQAir Mask, which uses a 3-layer HyperHEPA filter media design to filter at least 95% of all contaminants in particles in the air.
Verify proper fit by donning respirator and adjusting straps as necessary for a perfect fit.
See the manufacturer’s instructions included with the mask.
Trim or remove facial hair if you need to wear a respirator, as respirators cannot fit properly on people with facial hair.
IQAir is a Swiss-based air quality technology company that since 1963 has empowered individuals, organizations, and communities to breathe cleaner air through information, collaboration, and technology solutions.
- The 5-layer PM2.5 filter helps prevent dust and other small particles.
- With the breathing valve, the mask allows air to enter the body while keeping moisture out. It also keeps you away from toxins and harmful substances in the air.
- The mask reduces the risk of inhaling gases, harmful odors, pollen, smoke, dust and other harmful particles.
- After wearing the mask, the adjustable nose piece according to the shape of each person’s nose to fit the face, so that the sealing effect is better, and the wearer wearing the glasses can effectively reduce fogging after adjustment.
- Adjustable size of elastic earloop, to make it more comfortable to wear.
- The following intimate U-shaped design, increases the comfort and sealing of the mouth and jaw, does not affect the language of communication.
The masks are washable, reusable.
- Dual one-way relief valves trap and filter air molecules and reduce air resistance without sacrificing filtration.
- An adjustable nose clip helps to ensure a 360-degree seal and prevents fogging of the lens.
- To avoid dust and help you breathe smoothly, you don’t have to worry about fogging up your glasses.

Can wearing a regular medical mask protect you from the Corona virus?
A regular, baggy face mask can help you stop the spread of sneezing, coughing, and fluids to other people. This is how the corona virus spreads. People who wear masks should be discarded after each use. Explore our range of Stop Virus ™ disposable anti-virus face masks.
Can a respiratory mask stop the corona virus? Buy N95, KN95 and FFP2 respirators
Yes, respiratory masks (they fit well around the nose and mouth), commonly known as N95 masks, can protect against the virus if you wear them and wear them correctly. You must adjust them correctly so they are snug against the face.
These masks are thicker than a normal medical mask. However, they must be installed correctly and are not designed to be used for an extended period. 30 minutes is an average time to use. Discard the face when it gets wet or dirty. A typical respiratory facial mask will last more than 1 week. Use it when you are around other people, for example in an office or when traveling on public transport.
Some users will have trouble breathing. You cannot use N95, KN95 and FFP2 masks if you have a beard or stucco.
Can a Virus Face Mask Shield stop Corona Virus?
Yes, they will stop fluids and splashes from entering your eyes, nose, and mouth from coughing, sneezing, and other fluids.
Face mask protectors are made of plastic and will prevent respiratory droplets (cough, sneeze, and other liquids) from entering your mouth, eyes, and nose. This is how the corona virus spreads.
This is what corona virus test kits and kits that treat patients with the virus use to protect themselves from capture of the corona virus. NHS teams, hospitals, caregivers and pharmacists use hundreds of Virus Stop Virus ™ face shields to protect themselves and their patients.
Some people wear a face mask and a face mask shield.

In short, different countries use different codes and numbers to name their respirators. They are all very similar.
- The N95 is the US standard. USA
- The KN95 is the Chinese standard.
- The KF94 is the Korean standard.
FFP2 is the EU standard. This includes the UK.
The most commonly known respirator classification is the NIOSH system, which classifies masks as N95, N99, and N100. These masks are rated by the American National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which is part of the CDC.
The number on NIOSH-rated masks means the filter’s filter effectiveness. For example, an N95 mask is required to stop AT LEAST 95% of 0.3 micron-sized particles. An R95 mask will also filter out at least 95% of the 0.3 micron particles.
The only difference comes with the N100 and P100 rated masks. At this point, complete filtration is impossible, and a 100-rated mask is effective in stopping 99.97% of the 0.3 micron particles.
The next most common masks you will find are those classified by the European Union. These skins come in three different classifications, FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. Although the numbers on these skins do not follow the same system as the NIOSH skins, the higher numbers are even better.
An FFP1 mask has 80% filtration, FFP2 has 94% and works much the same way as an N95 mask, and FFP3 has 99% and works similarly to an N99 mask. In summary, aside from the FFP1 rating, which performs significantly worse than any NIOSH-rated mask, European EN-rated masks perform similarly to their NIOSH equivalents.
KN95 skins are the standard skins that are intended for the vast majority of users. They are the same as N95 in the United States.
Korean KF rated skins come in two different levels, KF80 and KF94. Like the NIOSH system, the number represents the particle filtration rate, and this makes the masks very easy to compare.
The KF system is based on the European FFP classification system and, as such, works almost identically. A KF80 mask works the same as an FFP1 mask, and KF94 will work the same as an FFP2 mask.
If possible, use KF94 masks when possible as they have significantly greater protection than KF80 masks. In Korea, KF80 masks are often aimed at children and KF94 at adults.
N95 vs KN95 vs FFP2 vs KF94 respiratory masks
Buy N95, KN95 and FFP2 respirators (UK Stock)
It is worth noting again that since the KF94 respirator face masks use the same specifications as the FFP2 respirator face masks, this comparison is really between the N95, KN95 and FFP2 respirators.
N95 and KN95 rated masks are effective at filtering at least 95% of the particles. FFP2 skins have a 94% rating. For this reason, the N95 and KN95 skins are slightly more effective than FFP2 and KF94.
However, the difference is minimal, and some FFP2 and KF94 masks can filter out a significantly higher percentage of particles than 94%.
China’s KN95 masks are the same as N95 masks in the US. USA
